Whether taking a business trip or jetting off for a much-needed vacation, packing your bags can be a headache. Lugging around a heavy suitcase or having to pay extra for excess baggage are two common problems travelers need to avoid. So whether you’re a frequent flyer or traveling abroad for the first time, here are some tips for efficient packing and surviving bag fees.
👉🏼 Start making a packing list in advance and review the list a day before you leave. This will help you consider what items you need compared to what you are tempted to bring. Clothes should be kept to a minimum, and always bring components that can be layered up in case of sudden temperature changes, evaluate what type of clothing you need to bring for your trip. Try to pack wrinkle-free and versatile items to create a few different outfits that are easy to mix and match but still look stylish.
Packaging a small laundry bag is always a good idea. Being able to do a few loads of laundry during the trip can leave more room for souvenirs. When packing, consider the type of travel luggage you are bringing and use the pockets it may feature. Place small items such as socks and jewelry into bags that can be slotted into external pockets. Pack electronics such as cell phones and tablets in your carry-on bag. This will ensure that all important items are safe and sound.
Another surefire way to lighten your load is to regulate toiletries strictly. Make sure to check specifics on the transportation requirements. Put all your liquids in bags and submit them before security. Invest in small containers and transfer all liquids into them.
Most travelers forget about hair products and styling tools or that cosmetics and makeup need to be in containers under 3oz (100mL). If you're trying to save on space, leave expensive and precious items safely home. Things such as sunscreen and nail products can be bought locally.
Finally, if saving money is a significant factor in your trip, think twice before purchasing a checkable bag 💸. Most airlines allow at least one free personal bag, so make sure to use the size restrictions to your advantage. It is possible to fit a week’s worth of clothes into a small personal bag (backpacking is my favorite way to travel) and wear a few pieces on the plane (bulky items such as coats and jackets) as a space-saving technique.
